The internet giant, Google has launched it's free text messaging service to it's users in India. With the help of this service, users can send text messages to mobile phones using Gmail chat.
The person who receives a text message via this service, can reply to the message and that will appear as replies in Gmail Chat. Just like a regular chat, the conversation would be stored in the user's chat history.
Earlier, this service was available to users in 51 countries and on October 10, it was extended to the users in India as well.
The operators that currently support this service include Idea, Loop Mobile, Aircel, Reliance, MTS, Tata Indicom, Vodafone and Tata DoCoMo. The service is available in Mumbai, Kolkata, Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, Bihar, Andaman & Nicobar and Assam circles. The operators that do not support this service as of now include BSNL, MTNL and Airtel.
The users on Gmail need to add phone numbers to their contact list in order to send the text message.
Initially, a credit of 50 text messages is given to each user. If the user sends a text message via the service, their credit decreases by 1 while if they receive a reply to the message, the user's credit increases by 5. At most, the credit limit can be 50 at any given time. If the credit limit of the user reaches zero, one credit would be added to their account after 24 hours.
If any person does not wish to receive the text messages sent via the Gmail service, they can stop this service by sending 'STOP' to +918082801060. If the user wishes to reactivate the service, they can SMS 'START' to the same number.
